Martyna is a recent graduate from MA Service Design at London College of Communication.

Interview

Why did you decide to pursue a postgraduate degree and why MA Service Design?
It was always my dream to study abroad. Also, I firmly believe that as a designer you need to look for inspiration in different environments and contexts. Personally, I decided to move from the industrial field to design activities which are more holistic and focused on system thinking.

What was the inspiration behind your final project?
An interest in placemaking and the opportunity to investigate regeneration issues based on a real case study inspired me to explore more aspects around revitalisation. The knowledge and experience I gained over several years (because of involvement in the regenerative project in Poland) provided a vast range of insights and revealed many valuable perspectives for new solutions that could be implemented in the near future.

What did you most enjoy about studying MA Service Design?
The opportunity to meet people from around the world. Everyday conversations and discussions have taught me to be more brave and open.

What was the most valuable lesson you learnt on the course?
The opportunity to work in a diverse group and collaborate with people with different experiences. This allowed me to look into problems from a new contextual perspective. MA Service Design has had a great impact on my creative and critical development and sense-making skills.

Did you engage with industry during the course?
Each project was based on a brief set by outside stakeholders and organisations. Mostly, these briefs focused on creating social change.

If you had to sum up your London College of Communication experience in three words, what would they be?
Creative, challenging and inspirational.

Why would you recommend MA Service Design to prospective students?
If you are passionate about human-centered design and curious what is beyond that, this course will give you a chance to discover new aspects of it. London College of Communication is an amazing place to see yourself from a different perspective, meet creative minds and enjoy London. The city inspires me every day!

What have you been up to since graduating?
Currently, I am a service design intern at Designit London.
