James Fair is the Course Leader for MA Film at London College of Communication.
He has produced and directed over ten independent feature films over the last twenty years while working part-time in Higher Education. He began writing film and book reviews for his local paper at the age of twelve and produced and directed a series of short documentaries for Channel Four by the age of 22.
His research specialises in alternative models of film production and the ways to make it more environmentally and economically sustainable. His PhD explored a different understanding of low and micro-budget film production and he demonstrated this work by shooting, editing and then screening feature films in seventy-two consecutive hours as part of major film festivals; ‘Watching & Waiting’ was made and screened at the Galway Film Fleadh in 2008 and ‘The Ballad of Des & Mo’ was made, screened, and entered the Audience Top Ten at the Melbourne International Film Festival in 2010.
He has worked as a consultant for international companies and organisations such as Fremantle Media, Yahoo!, Panasonic, Raindance, Xinhua, Konrad Wolf Babelsberg and the Bejing Film Academy. Recently he worked with BAFTA Albert’s Educational Partnership to train other academics in the delivery of the Applied Skills for Sustainability in the Media Industries programme, which is delivered at over 50 Higher Education Institutions around the United Kingdom. He has previously worked and gained qualifications at Bournemouth University, Staffordshire University and University College Dublin.
