Modern Art Theory through Practice Short Course

Course description

Our Modern Art Theory through Practice Short Course is designed to provide a particular line of inquiry for anyone interested in contemporary art through combining critical theory, practice and a day visiting galleries.

You will get a view of the London art world, visiting some of London's art galleries and museums, as well as less well known and alternative art spaces, framed around a set of references that begin to ask questions of what art is and what is it for.

The course structure will consist of a series of short introductory lectures on Modern and Contemporary ideas, followed by practical workshops in response to issues raised. Through this process you will create a research journal both in class and in response to your experience of exhibition visits. This journal can become an integral part of your portfolio demonstrating your understanding of the art world and contemporary art theory. It will also demonstrate where you have found inspiration, the development of your ideas and how your work relates to that of existing artists.
