YiMiao is a London-based artist working with embroidery, drawing, illustration and video, she is a Lecturer on the MA Illustration and Visual Media course at London College of Communication. Her work investigates the role of drawing and illustration practices as satire, remaking history and public understandings of contemporary politics, and exploring controversial social subjects through dialogues with a lighthearted approach.
YiMiao expands definitions of drawing and illustration through diverse media including textiles, engraving on glass and metal laser engraving.
Since 2017, YiMiao has pursued her vision in expanded drawing practice, led by working innovatively with embroidery machines and hand stitching, to create contemporary ‘Embroidery-Drawing’. Her solo exhibition and six-month residency 'YiMiao Shih: Rabbrexit Means Rabbrexit', House of Illustration, London (2019), involved production of a series of new works in mixed media, drawing together YiMiao’s real-world observations of the nationalistic fervour, economic uncertainty and fragmentation of societal bonds brought about by Brexit.
YiMiao has participated in group shows at Royal Academy of Arts, Saatchi Gallery, London Transport Museum, Seventeen Gallery and Mall Galleries. Recently, her latest ‘Embroidery-Drawing’ work was presented in ‘Artist Salon: YiMiao Shih and her curious subjects’ at Bloomsbury Gallery, curated by the Chinese Art and Culture Exchange and Promotion Association.
She has a BFA in Fine Art from National Taiwan Normal University, and a MA in Visual Communication from Royal College of Art. YiMiao is an Associate lecturer in Visual Communication at the Royal College of Art.
YiMiao is a member of the Artistic Programme Advisory Panel at Quentin Blake Centre for Illustration. She was granted a DYCP grant from Arts Council England in 2022.
