Biography

Sean Coates is the Year 2 Leader at BA (Hons) Computer Animation and Visual Effects.

Sean is a multidisciplinary artist with a BA in Computer Animation Art from the NCCA at Bournemouth and an MA in Fine Art Painting from UAL. He has exhibited both paintings and digital works across London, as well as curated and organised exhibitions. Throughout his varied career, he has collaborated with numerous artists, most notably Anderson & Low, acting as their first assistant in developing works for private collections and museums.

In addition to his creative practice Sean also has years of industry experience working on episodic and advertising projects at Flatface animation as a 3D generalist and compositor. Here he worked on projects for the BBC and SKY such as Killing Eve and The Midwich Cuckoos.

Committed to research and education, Sean has published tutorials on the Foundry's Learn platform, offering in-depth insights into procedural texturing and look development workflows - both essential components of Computer Animation and Visual Effects. He is passionate about mentoring the next generation of artists, encouraging the study of film and art history to inspire creativity while integrating industry insights to prepare students for the fast-evolving demands of VFX and CGI.
