Biography

Mat is a Lecturer in Emerging Technologies for BA (Hons) Graphic Branding and Identity at London College of Communication, and a multidisciplinary artist. He supports students to make work that is innovative, ethical, critical and inclusive, combining an enthusiasm for technology’s creative possibilities with a deep love of traditional crafts.

Mat has worked in the creative digital industries for over 25 years as a creative director, art director and freelance creative. He’s created global integrated campaigns for brands that include Philips, Dove, Vivobarefoot, L’Oréal, Carlsberg, innocent drinks, The Body Shop, Sky, Fujifilm, Nestlé, GlaxoSmithKline, Tropicana, dunhill and Peugeot, and worked with Unilever at Google’s Creative Academy brand innovation workshops in San Francisco. Mat has been lucky enough to shoot campaigns in Mumbai, Montreal, New York, Mallorca and Croydon.

Mat is experienced in the fields of interaction design, motion graphics, art direction, illustration, photography, moving image, and writing. In the late '90s he founded a CGI animation studio, and worked at a games design company, before becoming a digital creative and motion graphics designer at several new media agencies.

He became a creative director at integrated advertising agencies including Agency Republic, Havas helia and Havas London and went freelance in 2017, co-creating a lifestyle brand start-up – ‘Practical Magic’ – built around 56 of his illustrations and screenprints. A book of this project is due to be published in 2023 by Welbeck.

Mat's art practice concerns the uncanniness of materials and machines, and the materiality of the invisible, with works exhibited at Ars Electronica, withoutform.space, Espacio Gallery, Queer Arts Now, Shipton Street Gallery, theprintspace and Woolwich Contemporary Print.

Mat has an MA in Interaction Design from LCC, and a BA in Fine Art from Norwich School of Art. In his spare time, he enjoys running, baking, printmaking, coding and gardening.
