Biography

Gareth Mitchell is a Lecturer on BA (Hons) Sound Arts and MA Music Production at London College of Communication.

Gareth is a sound artist practising in the areas of music composition, performance and installation. Education is a strong component of his work and acts as a counter-balance to artistic endeavours.

He has released albums of electronic music for a variety of labels, such as Kranky and Staalplaat, and performed live at festivals such as The Online Flash Film Festival (Barcelona) and EARational (’s-Hertogenbosch), along with venues such as New York’s The Knitting Factory and Berlin’s Madam Claude.

Gareth has created installations at the Angus Hughes Gallery and Wateman’s Arts Centre in London and La Nuit Blanche in Calgary, Canada and, more recently, composed several works for theatre and dance projects, such as for the Düsseldorf Opera House, Vault Festival and The Place, both in London.

Gareth composes using fragments of voice and guitar samples of his own making, as well as a wide variety of synthesis techniques. In live performance, he explores voice and guitar extended techniques, often utilising the possibilities of expression offered by New Instruments.

His current focus is on interpreting and expressing patterns in nature using a combination of sonification and spatial sound techniques.
