Biography

Floriane (they/them) is a Lecturer on BA (Hons) Design for Art Direction at London College of Communication. They are a researcher, designer and educator and a part-time candidate in PhD in Visual Sociology at Goldsmiths University of London.

Floriane’s practice resides somewhere between sociology, visual and critical design, fashion and gender studies. By questioning how research methods perform normative representations of social lives, Floriane explores the design of participatory and visual research methods attentive to complex and ambivalent social realities.

Their research project ‘Diagramming Fluidity’, studies the diverse and creative approaches of London-based producers of fashion photography (art directors, editors, and photographers) to envision the fluidity of gender within an industry established on the binary menswear/womenswear. The visual outcome of the research was part of the exhibition 'Designs for Different Futures' touring in the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, US in 2019/20.

Floriane’s essay ‘Diagramming Fluidity: Designing a Research Method’ was published as a book by Onomatopee. The article ‘Diagrammatic Manifestos: A Method for Studying the Fluidity of Gender in the Production of Fashion Photography’ was published in the peer-reviewed journal Fashion Studies, and ‘A Fashion Degree in Humanswear? Students and educators doing fashion beyond binaries and norms’ was published on Futuress, an online magazine on queer intersectional feminist design research.

Floriane has worked with practice-based research and feminist networks in fashion, design, and sociology. These includes Futuress, MODUS — a platform for fashion expanded practices, Le Signe — the national centre for graphic design in France, Tent Gallery in Rotterdam, artist and researcher Femke de Vries, artist and professor Lucy Orta and the fashion journal Vestoj in Paris.

Floriane has a technical degree in fashion design from ESAA Duperré, Paris, France, a BA from Design Academy Eindhoven, Netherlands and a MA in Visual Sociology from Goldsmiths University of London, UK.
