Hold Tight

Stack of printed Hold Tight books

In January 2018, second year BA (Hons) Graphic Media Design students had the opportunity to design a new book jacket for a planned second expanded edition of non-fiction title HOLD TIGHT; Black masculinity, Millennials and the Meaning of Grime, by Jeffrey Boayke.

The students were also invited to produce graphic outcomes based upon the book’s text, statistical data and promotional material for a night entitled FULL FLOW that was a celebration of the musical form with guest grime DJs and live musicians.

The project was a direct response to HOLD TIGHT, credited as being one of the most accurate, and arguably the first, text of its kind to critically and socially interrogate the relationship between 21st Century Black British music genre and black male working class identity.

The final cover art was selected by Kit Cayless, Influx Press owner/editor, and the author and designed by Xiaomeng Liu, Maria Hristoforova and Inhae Son.
