MA Footwear Graduate Yuzhao Huang has been awarded the best Accessories project at ArtsThread's Global Design Graduate Show 2021, in collaboration with Gucci.

Yuzhao's 'Objects of Wonder' project wowed judges and deservedly took the crown. The collection comprises 5 decorative homeware pieces, "designed using high-heel language with mechanical elements that can transfer the pieces between forms and create unexpected movements".

The collection was inspired by 'Spomenik' World War II memorials from the Yugoslav era, which Yuzhao encountered in summer 2019 whilst travelling across Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina and Serbia.

When contacted by LCF about his win, Yuzhao was humble - "I was quite surprised when I got the email saying I was the winner - I wasn’t expecting this to come," he said. "At the same time, I felt recognised and honoured to be selected by the industry judges, which means a lot to a fresh graduate, especially under the current climate."

What made you upload your project to the creative portfolio brief?
I knew of ArtsThread back in my BA course and I always find it inspiring with all the portfolios and projects. I wanted to be a part of the community so I uploaded my master’s degree's final project to the platform, at which point I noticed the Global Design Graduate Show 2021. I want to share my project with as many audiences as possible so I just went for it.
Who would you like to thank after winning?

I’d like to thank my tutor Eelko Moorer for guiding me through the whole process. And of course, my parents, who have always been my supports unconditionally.

What advice would you give to any students looking to put themselves forward for the award next year?

My advice to the student next year is to think of the presentation very carefully - how can you grab someone’s attention and interests in 10 seconds?
