Liberty challenged three cutting-edge LCF graduates to create, contemporary pieces from the Liberty London Fabrics SS18 Alpine Symphony collection.

Fotini Handra (BA Womenswear), Joseph Standish (BA Fashion Design and Development) and Daniel Pascal Tanner (BA Womenswear), had exclusive behind-the-scenes access to the Liberty design studio, where they were shown the creative process behind the collection, from concept to final composition, before selecting their chosen fabrics and prints. Three weeks of conceptualising, toiles and testing followed as the final garments began to take shape.

Mary-Ann Dunkley, Head of Design at Liberty London Fabrics spoke about the collaboration saying:

It’s great to work with new design talent to see how they interpret our collections in fresh and exciting ways. It’s important for us to engage with the designers of the future. The Alpine Symphony collection is bursting with exciting potential and gives talented young people a brief to play and explore.

Take a glimpse at the final collections from each of the students below:

Joseph Standish

After meeting the design team, the first thing I did was go to the library. I took the lookbook with me and highlighted all the words that stood out and that I thought would tell a story…. this idea of mountaineering and exploration and climbing. I went through loads of archives of jackets and layers and started thinking about what a hiker would take with him.

It was so interesting to meet Mary-Ann and be introduced to the Alpine Symphony collection and see how a theme starts and the inspiration turns into the final stage. It was great to be able to ask a lot of questions.

Liberty caters for the eccentric and that’s someone I like to design for. I like to go into Liberty and really lose myself. This project was a good way to put my handwriting into iconic prints.

Rob Phillips, Creative Director for the School of Design and Technology at LCF told us:

“Working with Liberty has been an amazing opportunity for our talented alumni who have produced truly beautiful pieces using the new Alpine Symphony collection. All three designers have produced directional, contemporary pieces which exemplify the versatility and beauty of these fabrics.”
