Babette is from the UK and studied MA Fashion Journalism
What and where did you study prior to your MA at LCF?
Prior to studying MA Fashion Journalism at LCF I studied BA Chinese at the University of Leeds. This was a four-year course including the second year studying at Capital Normal University in Beijing. While I was in Beijing I interned at LifeStyle, a leading Chinese bilingual publication with a focus on fashion and lifestyle. Thus when I came back to the UK I edited the department magazine, EAST Magazine and wrote for the fashion section of the university newspaper. The focus of my Undergraduate degree was on language but I also took courses in Chinese culture and history, so by the end of my degree I had a Chinese language and cultural skill set that I was really keen to capitalise on during my MA.
What would be your ideal role?
I have a fabulous job! Currently I am the Culture Editor for Stylesight based in Hong Kong. I report on fashion and lifestyle for Hong Kong and Shanghai for our site, as well as reporting on Asian news and events for our Wanderlust blog. Hong Kong is a great city to both work and live in. It is really exciting to have an opportunity to experience first-hand local cultural developments especially in the Chinese fashion industry.
What advice would you give someone wanting to study at postgraduate level at LCF?
Come with lots of energy and ideas and be ready to take full advantage of what London offers. The industry contacts my MA course had were fantastic so be sure to get out in London and build up your network as much as possible. Also, get involved with extra-curricular projects, for example I participated in and won the Harpers Bazaar Art Plus Fashion Journalism award which was a fantastic and unique opportunity.
