LCF Alumni from BA (Hons) Fashion Design Technology: WomenswearChar Lauren Critoph, has been selected as a finalist in the Eastpak Artist Studio Wildcard competition. In collaboration with Arts Thread, the EAST Wildcard competition gives young and upcoming designers the chance to show their work alongside well-established names.

After hundreds of submissions, Char was chosen as one of three finalists who were then offered the chance to create a unique bag from the special edition ‘blank’ Padded Pak’r backpack.

Char said:

“The inspiration behind my entry started off with chain-mail and jewellery that I’ve been collecting over a long time, and articles and books that I’ve been reading about Rani Jhansi and freedom fighters of India. What I liked most about their stories is they all wore opulent saris and jewellery and were quite feminine, but they were also fearless in battle and they wore heavy armour. I like that juxtaposition, which is what I try to create in this design.”

The proceeds from the sales of the bags will be donated to the charity organisation Designers Against Aids, to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS and the need for safe sex.

Char added:

“I liked that I was able to help a good cause whilst also being able to be innovative and have a bit of fun.”
