Next up in the Industry Partner Awards 2015 is the Graduate Recruiter Award where we recognise the industry partners who support our graduates through careers fairs, C.V. workshops, interview experience and work placements, preparing them ready for the graduate job market.
This year’s winner is high street fashion retailer New Look. The brand, which was founded in 1969, has 700 stores globally as well as UK support centres, distribution site and head office. They offer graduates opportunities in a multitude of fashion roles.
We spoke to New Look to find out their advice for students seeking employment.
Apollonia Capezzaera, Talent Attraction Lead at New Look:
We’re really excited to be the winner of Graduate Recruiter Award. We’re always very pleased to attend career fairs and meet the motivated cohort of students at LCF.
Apollonia kindly gave us her top three tips for students applying for graduate roles.
We are aware fashion could be a competitive industry to get in but here are some top tips to boost your application:
-
Read the job description thoroughly. It’s really important you have an understanding of the job you’re applying for. We hear a lot of times students that would either consider a career in Buying or in Merchandising. Bear in mind the two roles are very different: buying is usually more creative and we’re looking for people with a commercial eye but also able to think outside the box and come up with original ideas; Merchandising is a way more analytical role, you’ll be working with numbers and Excel spreadsheets.
-
Tailor your C.V. We receive so many C.V.s, we literally take 20 seconds to read each. Be concise and make your relevant experience stand out. Industry experience is important, so try to get some work placements in the sector before applying to a role. We offer work experience in Buying and PR so just check our career’s website and submit your application!
-
Come prepared. Do some research around the industry, the brand and our competitors. One of our key value is be brave: be original and think outside the box. At New Look we celebrate new ideas and people that are able to speak up!
