We are pleased to announce that Urban Outfitters are the next winners of our ongoing LCF Careers Industry Partner Awards, picking up the Graduate Recruiter Award for their amazing work with LCF and our students.
So what is it really like to work for Urban Outfitters? We asked Jane Day, Director of Talent Development at URBN in Philadelphia, to give us a day-in-the-life…
I woke up at… 5:30 AM. I always start my day with a run/walk with my dog, a Border Collie mix we rescued 7 years ago. Having that time each morning allows me to get prepared for the day. I drive to work and I arrive at 9:00 AM. I’m not a coffee person, but I always have a Dr. Pepper.
When I first get into work... we are meeting with the Urban Outfitters design team to review sketches from a student design project. I can’t wait to see all the fabulous ideas the students have from the design brief we gave them! The selected garments will be made & featured at the college’s runway show in May.
This morning… we just finished interviewing for summer internships. Over 1,600 students applied and we read every application! Two hundred and thirty students came in for our interview day last week, so we are sorting through all the feedback and selecting what will be the summer internship class of 2015!
I get lunch… early. Our home office has an amazing café, so I eat there every day. Lunch break? I bring my lunch back to my desk and keep working. Okay, after I catch up on Instagram! You can see more of what we’ve got going on at #urbancollegescout and #urbnsummer2015.
This afternoon… I am meeting with my team and we are planning our spring travel plans – what schools we will visit and graduate shows we will attend. Tough life, right? We have a blast! Typically, I stay at work a little later in the evening – I hate sitting in traffic. Plus, I get a lot done after 5:00 PM!
Tonight… we are off to a fundraising event with friends to support an organisation that fosters and trains puppies to become service dogs. We’ll be having Mexican food at the fund raiser!
The highlight of my day was… reuniting with our assistants who are going through our buying rotation program. They just got back from 4 months in stores and it is so fun to see how much they have learned while they were away. Personally, finding out my son made the distinguished honour roll was pretty cool too!
My advice… if you love fashion, meeting new people, and are passionate URBN could be the perfect place for you!
It is so important for companies to offer work experience to students because… it is a great way for companies to stay connected to the next generation of leaders!
Our LCF placements have… been very successful at URBN. We have a very creative, innovative work environment that lends itself well to students who want to work for a fast-paced fashion retailer.
When undergoing work experience at URBN students can expect to learn… everything! Students have the opportunity to learn so much about the design process – from the initial concept meeting to garment fitting and then seeing it in stores.
We asked LCF Careers why they felt Urban Outfitters deserved the award:
“Urban Outfitters have been a fantastic industry partner throughout the years, consistently offering LCF students the opportunity to work with them on 12 month paid placements at their head office in Philadelphia, and in graduate roles across the company. Each year Jane Day, Director of Talent Development, comes over with her design team to present to the students, followed by interviews for selected candidates.
We have had several students lucky enough to be selected for graduateroles and placements over the years, and had such an incredible time that they come back to present to the second years about what a great opportunity it is to work there. They have a fun, friendly but fast-paced office, which throws students into the throngs of the exciting global high street market, and encourages them to develop as much as possible during their time there. Students have even been offered graduate jobs to return to once they have completed their final year, which shows an invested commitment and understanding to the students’ studies. Urban Outfitters have always been fantastic to deal with; consistently upbeat, cooperative and quick to respond.”
