Annu Kilpeläinen, a London College of Communication BA (Hons) Graphic and Media Design graduate who took the Illustration pathway, has had her work selected to be part of this year’s ‘Pick Me Up’, the UK’s original contemporary graphic arts festival, now in its fifth year.
‘Pick Me Up’ scours blogs and magazines, looking for talented and emerging illustrators who are handpicked to be part of the ‘Pick Me Up Selects’ section of the Somerset House festival. Annu was part of this year’s selection. Other parts of the festival include a section dedicated to collectives and companies who set up studio-like spaces specifically for the festival, events, workshops and creative forums.
“Annu is an illustrator with a love for all things ludicrous. Annu uses urban landscapes as her inspiration and turns them into abstracted illustrations filled with summery colours and patterns. Her work has featured in It’s Nice That, Booooooom and Another Loves. Her recent commissions include The Sunday Times, The Desktop Magazine, Advertising Producers Association and Battersea Arts Centre.” – Pick Me Up
Annu explains “It has been great being involved in such a big scale thing. It is great exposure and also a really nice way of meeting other illustrators and industry professionals”.
Having just finished illustrating a colouring book for Cicada Books that comes out later this year, Annu also painted a few skateboards for the Rosie Lees Deckchair project. At the moment she is working on a few smaller illustration projects and planning for the rest of the year.
On LCC, Annu says “LCC has great facilities, but I only really appreciated this at the end of my second year. You get freedom to experiment a lot, so you can always get a lot out of any experience there.
