Every week students on the BA (Hons) Public Relations course at LCC have time set aside to meet and talk with PR practitioners.

Here third year student Kelly Hewitt talks about her experience meeting industry insiders.

“The BA (Hons) Public Relations course at LCC has a strong focus on employability and therefore, we often get the opportunity to meet industry professionals. I always get excited to speak with different people working in PR; to hear their advice to aspiring PR students and to find out about their careers. Meeting industry practitioners within the context of the course is a great way of building a professional network whilst studying.

“The biggest industry highlight for me has to be visiting Edelman, a leading global communications-marketing firm in New York. Last May a group of us were lucky enough to visit the Edelman office and hear from a group of employees there.

“In New York I learnt a great deal about the changing face of PR, and had the opportunity to really interrogate the differences between in-house and agency PR work. I left feeling extremely inspired and motivated to pursue a career in PR with a more open mind to the different types of work I could pursue.

“Another highlight was a lunchtime master class we had in February in which we were lucky enough to have a guest lecture with Charlene Corrin, the General Manager of the International Communications Consultancy Organisation (ICCO).

“Charlene spoke in depth about the ICCO and PR Week World PR Report from 2016, giving us the chance to speak in-depth about research in the field of public relations. It was extremely valuable and refreshing to have an insight into really current research regarding which sectors are growing the fastest and which skills employers are focussing on.

“We also had a really exciting master class in which four recent LCC graduates came back to College to tell us about their life as a student on the course and their transition from University to the PR industry. It was so uplifting to see previous students from my course now in very successful PR roles.”
