Biography

Sophie Demay is a designer, curator, writer and is Associate Lecturer for MA Graphic Media Design at London College of Communication.

Sophie divides her time between her graphic design studio in Dalston, teaching at LCC, her curatorial practice and writing commissions for design periodicals. Working across mediums, her studio specialises in design for the arts. She works in close collaboration with artists and contemporary art galleries on printed matter, exhibitions and publications.

Sophie is engaged in an ongoing research project concerned with the exhibition of graphic design. Her latest book, Openbooks Volume A—E published by Hato Press in 2015, explores connections between printed objects and forms of exhibitions. Since 2010, she co-organised a series of exhibitions and events to experiment with these interactions.

She regularly writes for French design magazine Étapes. In 2013 she undertook a research trip to document Poland’s contemporary design scene in partnership with the German magazine Novum and Slanted and her article Playing Truant, looking at alternative and nomadic art schools, was published in 2014.

Sophie has been teaching at LCC since 2012, previously for BA (Hons) Design for Graphic Communication and BA (Hons) Graphic and Media Design before joining MA Graphic Media Design.

With an interest in contexts of production, she has led several outdoor projects with students as well as community projects, one of which with  The Serpentine Galleries’ Centre for Possible Studies explored how design might relate to focal points of current socio-political debates. She co-created Access Through Tools, a festival exploring the construction of knowledge through design production, which brought guests and artists from all over Europe in a series of events, workshops, lectures and exhibition held at LCC in 2015.

Her interest in education, and previous involvement in alternative education projects (Department 21Parallel School of Art), led her to co-run the Education Unit of the Expanded Designer, an undergraduate contextual programme at Camberwell College of Arts.

Sophie studied at several postgraduate design schools in France and holds an MA in Communication Art & Design from the Royal College of Art, London.
