Professor Jim Macnamara PhD, FAMEC, FAMI, CPM, FPRIA is Professor of Public Communication at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and Visiting Professor in the Communications and Media programme at London College of Communication.

Professor Macnamara joined UTS in 2007 after a distinguished 30-year career in professional communication practice spanning journalism, corporate and marketing communication, and media and communication research.

Jim is a frequent visitor to London where he has worked with the UK Cabinet Office on international research projects related to organisational listening and engagement and as a Visiting Professor at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). His organisational listening findings and recommendations have been described as ‘of major international significance’.

As well as cutting edge research into organisational listening through social and market research, consultation, stakeholder engagement, digital technologies and other methods, Jim is internationally recognised for his research in relation to measurement and evaluation of public communication.

This was recognised in 2017 when he was awarded The Don Bartholomew Award for ‘outstanding service to the communications industry’ by the UK-based International Association for Measurement and Evaluation of Communication (AMEC) and also The Pathfinder Award, ‘the highest academic honour’ awarded by the Institute for Public Relations (IPR) in the US for ‘scholarly research that has made a significant contribution to the body of knowledge and practice’ of the field.

Jim is the author of 16 books, including Evaluating Public Communication: Exploring New Models, Standards, and Best Practice (Routledge, 2017) and Organizational Listening: The Missing Essential in Public Communication (Peter Lang, 2016).
