Jess Baines is Interim Contextual and Theoretical Studies Leader across the Design School at London College of Communication. She is based in the Graphic Communication Programme.
Jess studied Ceramics (BA) at Camberwell College of Art and 20th Century Art History & Theory (MA) at Goldsmiths College. Her PhD at London School of Economics (LSE) was on the history of late twentieth-century radical printing workshops.
Jess's career spans involvement in design and print co-operatives, working in ceramics studios, including running a project for mental health service users, freelance design, curation, contextual and theoretical studies as well as studio teaching. She was previously co-course leader for BA (Hons) Design Cultures at London College of Communication, now BA (Hons) Design Management.
Jess has written and taught BA (Hons) Contextual and Theoretical Studies units on subjects that reflect her interests, including alternative and activist media, feminism, public art, urban space (London) and most recently, moved like many others, by the climate and ecological crisis, on this topic.
