John’s research-led practice includes large-scale multi-channel installations for galleries and public spaces, delicate sound sculptures and composed documentaries for radio. His 'Installation for 300 speakers, Pianola and vacuum cleaner' became the first work of sound art in the Saatchi collection in London and won him the British Composer Award for Sonic Art in 2010.

He has also done a series of site-specific installations using only very high and very low frequency sounds.

John’s work with endangered languages includes a project with speakers of click languages in the Kalahari Desert which resulted in an immersive installation shown at the Botswana National Museum, the National Art Gallery of Namibia and at SOAS University of London, as well as a half-hour radio piece for the BBC which won the Silver Award at the Third Coast International Audio Festival in Chicago.

Another project was based on one of Canada’s endangered indigenous languages, Gitxsanimaax. The resulting installation has been shown at the American Anthropological Association Conference in San Francisco, the ‘Ksan Museum in Gitxsan territory and twice at the Museum of Anthropology in Vancouver.

John was artist-in-residence for one year at one of the world’s leading centres for heart and lung transplants. Working with photographer Tim Wainwright, he produced a book, a 24-channel installation and an award-winning half-hour commission for BBC Radio 3. Another collaboration with Wainwright, ‘I Am Not the Cancer’ is a video and sound installation based on women with metastatic breast cancer which has shown in ten cities including London, Athens, Brussels, Nicosia, Lisbon and Dubai.
