Biography

Dr Chris de Selincourt is a moving image researcher and senior lecturer for MA Animation. His teaching areas include Film Theory, Documentary Studies, Disruption and Digital Networks, Audio-Visual Culture, Multimedia and Multisensory Environments.

After leaving Central St Martin where he studied Graphic Design, Chris began a career in broadcast, working as freelance editor and visual researcher, for commercial and documentary production companies (including Red Bee Media, Knucklehead, VET, Lion TV and My Therapy); working on TV indents for the BBC, commercials for BMW, Audi, Ford, M&S, and documentaries for the Discovery Chanel and ITV. While working as an editor – immersed for extended periods of time within the screen-world, he was confronted by troubling questions about the mind’s location, experience and our relationship to media. So he returned to academia in search of answers.

Five years later he completed a PhD by research, which led the use of the extended mind theory for researching editing practice and revealed how current debates on mental location, distributed cognition and situated aesthetics serve to illuminate both traditional and emerging theories of screen practice. The outcomes of his research are being published and presented at conferences across the UK and Europe.

The areas of his research include; Artists Moving Image 1966-1999, Media Ecology and Consciousness Studies.
