Biography

Max Dovey is ‘28% man, 16.1% artist and 14.1% successful.’

This description was provided by a commercial image caption analysis software called ‘Imagga’. It was subsequently used in his work 'How to Be More or Less Human' and 'Hipster Bar'.

His research is concerned with the increasing quantification of human experience and the data science that measures, models and predicts human behaviour and emotions. His work uses performance to decode and confront contentious technological systems and considers data critically as a representation of value in a playful, participatory and accessible way.

He has produced a series of performance works that explore representation of the body - specifically gender and cultural stereotypes - in machine learning and AI.

In ‘How to be More or Less Human’ (2015) Max performs with an image recognition application that constantly re-classifies his gender based on what he is wearing.

In ‘A Hipster Bar’ (2016) members of the public are given free drinks from a pop-up bar if an image recognition camera on the door verifies them as over 90% hipster.

Subverting A.I and machine learning applications through curious playful orchestrations, ‘HITS’ (Human Intelligence tasks, 2016) turns the abstracted cognitive labour frequently used in sorting data sets for machine learning applications into a satirical TV style gameshow, where 2 teams compete to create an image recognition algorithm that could identify different types of human labour.

He was appointed as a researcher for Institute of Network Cultures in Amsterdam where he produced the symposium ‘MoneyLab’, creatively exploring alternative forms of money, crypto and finance for the arts. He has written about crypto-currencies, blockchain and alternate economies and contributed in various experimental artistic interventions and collaborative explorations into distributed ledger technologies and value systems in art and design.
