Biography

Maia Conran’s research interrogates the structural forms of film and photography distribution and how artworks can challenge the foundational politics of lens-based production through its infrastructures. Seeking to offer a critical and collaborative methodology of resistance through movement, voice, and embodiment is the functional concern of Conran’s practice. She leverages these tactics to explore concepts of ownership, privacy, institutional power and agency.

Conran has collaboratively and individually produced work in publications for Aid and Abet (Cambridge), Spike Island (Bristol), G39 (Cardiff) and Quote Unquote (Bucharest). A single screen version of her multi-screen film Term was published on DVD by Filmarmalade in 2012 and her work is the subject of a monograph entitled Here is the Yard published by Grand Union Gallery in 2014. Her screenplay Monkey Puzzle was distributed as a podcast for Quote Unquote (online) in 2020.

She has exhibited extensively in collaborative and group exhibitions internationally. Her work has also been selected for international awards, film festivals, group exhibitions, screenings. Solo exhibitions include Grand Union (Birmingham), G39 (Cardiff), IMT Gallery, Kingsgate Workshops (both London), Phoenix Gallery (Exeter) Bristol Diving School (collaboratively as Conran and Haimes) and Skelf online project space.

Residencies and fellowships support her engagement with space, place and institutional structures including Residencies at Cardiff Contemporary Art Festival; Glyn Vivian Gallery Swansea, Standpoint Gallery, London, and the National Slate Museum of Wales. Conran is currently the recipient of the Museum Arts Fellowship from the University of the Arts London and the Horniman Museum, London.

She is Senior Lecturer and Course Leader of BA Fine Art Photography at Camberwell College of Arts.
