Learn English for the Creative Industries at UAL, second in the world for Art and Design in the 2020 QS World University Rankings®.

This course is ideal if you want to improve your English in an art and design setting and:

you are a student, or you want to apply to UAL / another university


you work, or aspire to work in a creative industry


you have an interest in art and design


you want to study and live in London.

English level

This course has two levels:


Equivalent to:

  • CEFR A2-B1
  • Pre-intermediate / lower-intermediate
  • IELTS 4.5-5


Equivalent to:

  • CEFR B1+-B2
  • Intermediate / upper-intermediate
  • IELTS 5.5 +

If you have a valid English language test, submit it with your application. You do not need an IELTS score to apply.

If you don’t have a valid English language test, don’t worry. We’ll be in touch about alternative ways you can check your English language level.

Course description

On this course you will:

  • study General English, Academic English and English for the Creative Industries
  • learn English using art and design resources and topics including creative industries, design, fashion, art, photography, communications, architecture, London life and British culture
  • create art, design and media projects
  • live in and explore London
  • go on trips to famous galleries and museums, while also getting to know London like a local
  • improve your vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation skills
  • develop your reading, writing, listening and speaking skills
  • work on your research, presentation, communication, individual and group-work skills
  • get involved in UAL life through social events and activities
  • have access to:

Course assessment

At the end of the course you will be assessed on your final project. You will be given feedback and receive a Record of Study and Achievement certificate with your grades for this project.

Hours a week

20 hours a week for 12 weeks.

  • 10am – 2.45pm GMT Monday to Friday.
    • This includes a 45 minute break.
