Course overview

Compelling storytelling is increasingly recognised as a key tool for creative and professional success, and graduates with strong storytelling skillsets are in demand across many sectors.

Based at Wimbledon College of Arts, the course draws upon resources from across UAL including archives, technical facilities, and subject specialists. As storytelling is deeply rooted in people and place, the course also makes use of off-site locations to gather material and connect with audiences and communities.

During the Diploma in Storytelling, as part of a cohort of students from different UAL colleges, you’ll learn how storytelling can transform individual and collective practices. You’ll learn how to activate your contribution to society as a changemaker, and increase your employability as you build skills in practical techniques and contextual study.

The course is open to both experienced and new storytellers with innovative ideas who are curious, ambitious, and passionate about pursuing social change. With guidance from leading academics, technical specialists and professional storytellers, you’ll explore the creative and cultural influence of stories. You’ll experiment with storytelling techniques to develop impactful interventions across a range of media, like audiovisual and digital forms, literary and graphic works, image-making, or live performance events.

Working at the intersection of creative practice and social transformation, the Diploma is underpinned by the research outputs of the AKO Storytelling Institute. By studying alongside the institute, you’ll become part of a network of organisations, practitioners, and researchers. The course has been designed with critically engaged practice and social responsibility as a core value and encourages students from all backgrounds and interests to engage with storytelling.

Course units

The units on this course are designed to give you an in-depth understanding of purposeful storytelling as a valuable creative, cultural, and professional practice.

Unit 1

The initial unit invites you to experiment with storytelling techniques as you engage with the wider storytelling landscape. Through technical workshops, inspiring guest practitioners, and site visits, you’ll understand storytelling and social purpose across diverse cultures, contexts and forms. Emphasis is on creative inspiration and imagination as you develop a foundation of technical and contextual skills which you will expand through critical thinking and applied ethical practice in unit 2.

Unit 2

This unit supports you to locate your storytelling skills within the wider storytelling ecosystem. Through workshops and guidance from professional storytellers, you will refine techniques, co-create a story project and deepen your understanding of how narratives shape perceptions and audiences. The development of your creative practice, ethical awareness, and critical understanding will prepare you to plan and present a self-defined storytelling project in unit 3.

Unit 3

In the final unit, you’ll consolidate the creative, critical, and technical skills developed across the course to design and realise a self-defined storytelling project.
