ShaoLan Hsueh

Biography

ShaoLan is an entrepreneur, designer, author, podcast host, 2-time TED speaker, and dreamer. She is the creator of Chineasy – one of the most popular methods of learning Chinese outside of Chinese-speaking countries, with a vast number of followers. The goal is to empower people to understand China, Chinese culture, its language & to bridge the gap between East and West through technology and design.

ShaoLan is a tech entrepreneur with extensive business experience in Asia and Europe. She co-founded pAsia Inc, one of the major players on the Internet in the 1990s and began Caravel Capital in 2005 to advise young tech companies. She is Fmr Member of Development Advisory Boards of Saïd Business School of Oxford University, The Victoria and Albert Museum, and Asia House. In Nov 2021, she was appointed as the External Governor of the University of the Arts London (UAL).

She is named by The Sunday Times Magazine - One of the 21 ‘Leading Ladies in Tech in 2015’, Apple - ‘Woman who inspired’ in 2018 celebrating International Women’s Day, Microsoft - ‘Person of Action’ who inspire in 2018, and Entrepreneur.com - one of the Six Women with Asian roots who are Redefining Creative Entrepreneurship in 2019.

She has authored several books, including – Chineasy, The New Way to Read Chinese (2014, translated into 19 languages), Chineasy Everyday (2016), four best-selling books on software in Taiwan which was written during her University days. Her first Chineasy App ranked #2 (UK) and #6 (USA) in Education category at AppStore.

Chineasy was awarded Wallpaper* Magazine’s 2014 Design Award for “Life-Enhancer of the year” and ‘Best Designs of the Year 2014’ by the Design Museum (Visitor Vote) in the UK. It won D&AD 2015 awards. FastCompany has chosen Chineasy as the World’s Top 10 most Innovative Companies, backed by Kickstarter in 2015. Chineasy has become a showcase by many on how to use design and technology to solve large-scale problems.
