Biography

Darryl Clifton is an educator, researcher, artist and illustrator. He is the Programme Director of Illustration at Camberwell College of Arts, UAL.

Clifton’s research is defined as transdisciplinary, using methods that draw on the intersectional spaces of illustration, design, anthropology, the sociology of education and emerging technologies. There is a particular focus on the potential for disciplinary ‘disobedience’ to enable transformative educational experiences in the pursuit of social justice, equality, diversity and inclusivity.

In 2010, working with colleagues at UAL, Clifton revived 'Camberwell Press'. They transformed it into multi-disciplinary, studio creating opportunities for recent graduates and students. This enabled them gain experience in commercial, cultural and social practices.

In the same year, Clifton co-founded 'Mokita' with colleagues from Kingston School of Art and University of Brighton. 'Mokita' was an event-based forum that explored the social, political and ethical affect of Illustration practice.

Clifton currently chairs the Emerging Technology Research Group (ETRG), who recently participated in a pan-European funded research project called 'Accelerate'. ETRG works in consultation with internal and external partners, developing approaches to the integration of new and emerging technology into curricula and through research practice. Clifton is also the co-director of illustration educators, a global network of educators, practitioners and students that hosts on and offline events exploring current debates in Illustration pedagogy.
