Course description

The aim of this Introduction to Drawing Short Course is to demystify the process of drawing. Whether it is just for pleasure or if you are considering going on to do graphic design, illustration, fashion or fine art this course will give you an excellent start.

During the course you will be given short exercises that will introduce you to different drawing styles and methods. You will start with a very basic vocabulary of drawing - these will be the basic building blocks and getting to grips with these early on will help you as your drawing develops.

This course will use life models.

Who should attend this short course?
This course is suitable for beginners or those wishing to refamiliarise themselves with the basics of drawing.

Course outcomes
By the end of this course students should:


  • Have improved confidence in their drawing technique.
  • Explored different drawing styles and methods to develop their drawing.
  • Have drawn from life models.

  • As long as you attend a minimum of 80% of your classes, we will provide you with a certificate of attendance.

IMPORTANT Information: There is currently no lift access at our Archway site. Access to your classroom is only via the stairs.

Topics covered

Materials, methods, composition, space, form, the subject, the object and the nude figure will all be taught. The course will consist of practical studio work interspersed with demonstrations and slide talks.

Materials to be provided by tutor/CSM
For the first 3 sessions all materials will be provided by the CSM. These include:

  • Paper
  • Pencils
  • Erasers
  • Charcoal

For sessions 4 onwards, basic materials should be brought by the student. These include:

  • Willow charcoal sticks medium size -1 box
  • 1 white small putty rubber - Daler Rowney Firm
  • Whitesand cartridge or similar 140gsm A1 - 12 sheets
  • Masking tape
  • Conte chalk - red sanguin (must be 2450)
