Course overview
Using simple forms to break down complex information, you will explore in depth the relationships between the skeleton and the major muscle groups, and ways of applying such knowledge to create convincing and expressive figure drawings.
Historically, anatomical knowledge of the human figure has been a key element in the traditional techniques used in European painting and drawing. It is an essential field that remains relevant and is used by animators and illustrators working today.
Who this course is for
This course is suitable for students with some previous anatomical drawing experience who wish to improve their figure drawing.
It is very relevant to those working with or interested in animation, character design, fashion, and illustration.

Topics covered
- Working from the life model, prepared drawings and examples, the course will help you develop the skills and confidence needed to tackle a range of drawing issues
- We will explore how to handle volume, tone and structure as well as drawing from memory
- Students can develop at their own pace as we explore how an awareness of anatomical structure can help to inform and enliven their drawings of the figure
Learning outcomes
- Explore in depth the relationships between the skeleton and the major muscle groups
- Familiarity with ways of applying the above knowledge to create convincing and expressive figure drawings

Materials
- At least 5 sheets of A2 cartridge paper
- 10 sheets of ordinary A2 newsprint paper
- Masking tape (or clips for attaching paper to drawing boards)
- Fixative Spray (hairspray is a cheap alternative)
- Willow charcoal sticks
- Putty rubber/plastic eraser
Tutor
David Price
David Price studied at Edinburgh School of Art, the University of Newcastle and The Royal College of Art. He is a practicing artist who in 2009 was selected for New Contemporaries. David has a PGCE teaching certificate and over 15 years of experience teaching drawing and fine art.
