Jillian Bianca has loved fashion since she was a child and always hoped to open her own business one day. So when she came across our Starting an Online Fashion Retail Business Online Short Course, Jillian couldn't wait to book a place.

“When I found the course online and saw the content that was going to be covered, I got so excited that I signed up almost immediately!” Jillian tells me.

We caught up with Jillian to find out more about her experience and interest in fashion.

Building a fashion brand

Students on our Starting An Online Fashion Business Online Short Course learn how to launch a successful ecommerce business.

The course is ideal for designers wanting to launch their own brand, traditional retailers building an online strategy, creatives developing their hobby, or those exploring a career change.

Led by a Creative Business Consultant with experience of combining the best of online and offline strategies required in today’s market, the course offers practical tips on how to get started.

Developing a business model

During the course, students explore how to define their business model, establish their niche and develop an effective e-commerce strategy.

Through a series of weekly interactive online classes, students are guided through the key elements of the online retail industry, from market research (e.g. target audience) to building a personal brand online.

Students gain an insight into several key topics including market positioning and brand identity, sustainable and ethical manufacturing practices and content creation.

I looked forward to my classes every week. It really felt like I was starting my own fashion business while I was on the course.

Online learning

Currently working as a Campaign Manager for an Asian based e-Commerce site and contributing to the style section of a Hong-Kong based publication, Jillian says despite her very busy professional life, she still wanted to study at what she calls “a top-grade university on fashion.”

Being able to do the course remotely from home in the Philippines allowed Jillian to learn not only from the tutor but also her fellow classmates. Having students from all over the world on the course gave the course a very cosmopolitan feel and even inspired Jillian to re-think some of her own best practices.

Marketing strategies

“The course gave me the inspiration to do new and innovative things that haven't really been done in our country before," says Jillian. "It taught me a lot of things that I now use in my career at the fashion e-commerce site I work for. I know more about the process of preparing and curating new fashion collections, optimising user experience for an e-commerce site, and even maximising digital media to drive users to the site."

In addition to developing a bank of transferrable skills that she can now use in her professional practice, Jillian credits the structure of the course itself citing that the interactive nature of the classes gave her a real flavour of what it would be like to work within the business side of fashion.

“I would highly recommend anyone to do a short course! You get to learn from the industry's top experts, and you will have a diverse set of classmates to bounce ideas off as well. I looked forward to my classes every week and really liked working on the assignments given by my tutor. It really felt like I was starting my own fashion business while I was on the course.”
