Our graduating MA students have had a busy year and many have begun innovative projects and communities that will continue post-graduation. MA Textile Design student Rosamund Hanny is one such student. During her MA at Chelsea College of Arts, Hanny decided to create an online resource The Ethical Textile Print Room to create a community that would promote sustainable and environmental methods for screen printers and dyers.

Hanny explains her project:

“My MA project has been concerned with how ethical change can be implemented for screen printers and dyers through online education and social media.

Sustainability within fashion and textiles is a complex issue and one that can seem overwhelming for designers and makers.

In answer to this my online resource The Ethical Textile Print Room provides a community for textile screen printers and dyers. The aim is to engage practitioners in an ethical approach by providing a database of simple and accessible environmentally sensitive methods. We want to highlight responsible design by profiling textile artists who are pioneering ethical projects and act as a platform for debate. Encouraging designers to contribute ideas, information on processes and links to their work. Sharing creative solutions to improve efficiency, save resources and reduce environmental impact.

My practice is based on the techniques that are shown on the website. These include exhaust dyeing and exhaust sublimation printing on digital embroidery. My experience at Chelsea has allowed me to experiment across disciplines. Extending my skill set and professional development.”

We look forward to seeing Hanny’s textile work at the Postgraduate Summer Show (PV Friday 5th September 2014 6-9pm) and will keep an eye on her valuable online resource.
