Lunchtime dialogue sessions expanding the conversation around the emerging UAL Education Strategy

Overview

Bringing together external collaborators from across the global creative education sector and beyond, alongside internal active chairs, the series creates space for open, critical and generative conversations about creative arts education and its future. Sessions take the form of an online panel discussion or presentation, designed to encourage exchange, debate and shared learning.


In this session:

Join Professor Zey Suka-Bill (Pro Vice-Chancellor of Education and Student Success, Royal College of Art) and Christopher Bailey (researcher, artist and former Arts and Health Lead at the World Health Organization) for the next session in the Opening Out series.The discussion will be supported by Rosie Hornbuckle, PhD (Reader in Design, Camberwell, Chelsea & Wimbledon Colleges of Arts, UAL).


The first half of each event will be dedicated to presentations and discussion led by our invited speakers. The second half will focus on questions and discussion from the audience. Ask your questions at the link here.


Speaker Bios

Professor Zey Suka-Billis a nationally recognised leader in creative education, with over 25 years’ experience advancing inclusive pedagogy, curriculum innovation, and institutional change across UK higher education. At the Royal College of Art, she focuses on educational excellence, interdisciplinary learning, and supporting students to thrive academically, artistically, and professionally. Her leadership is grounded in equity, co-creation, and student agency, with a strong focus on improving graduate outcomes and closing awarding gaps. Zey previously served as Dean of Screen at London College of Communication, UAL, and as Interim Pro Vice-Chancellor with responsibility for student experience, digital learning, and wellbeing.


Christopher Bailey is a researcher, artist, and advocate, and was Arts and Health Lead at the World Health Organization. He is co-founder of the Jameel Arts and Health Lab, building global research networks to explore the health benefits of the arts, particularly for underserved communities and populations affected by trauma and conflict. Educated at Columbia and Oxford Universities, and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, he began his career as an actor and playwright before joining the Rockefeller Foundation and WHO. Bailey has performed works worldwide, including Stage 4: Cancer and the Imagination and The Vanishing Point, amplifying the WHO definition of health - physical, mental, and social wellbeing - through the arts, and has delivered keynote performances including recently as part of the Shakespeare and Wellbeing collaboration between Shakespeare’s Globe and WHO.


Rosie Hornbuckle, PhD is Reader in Design and co-founder of the Complex Collaborations Design Research Hub at University of the Arts London. Her practice is grounded in translational design approaches, developing visual and tactile tools within sustainable and social innovation projects involving transdisciplinary collaboration.Rosie’s research explores alternative pathways for future design practice, focusing on theoretical and methodological innovations for collaborative work through ethnographic and autoethnographic analysis. Her work spans areas including circular textiles, bioeconomy, food systems, healthcare, and sustainability. She is the co-author of Design Materials and Making for Social Change (Routledge) and welcomes PhD researchers interested in socially responsive and systemic design practices.

This workshop is open to all UAL staff and guests.
