Lunchtime dialogue sessions expanding the conversation around the emerging UAL Education Strategy

Overview

Bringing together external collaborators from across the global creative education sector and beyond, alongside internal active chairs, the series creates space for open, critical and generative conversations about creative arts education and its future. Sessions take the form of an online panel discussion or presentation, designed to encourage exchange, debate and shared learning.


In this session:

Join ProfessorShânWareing(Vice-Chancellor, Middlesex University), Professor Jason Arday (Professor of Sociology of Education at the University of Cambridge) and Dr Silke Lange (Reader in Hybrid and Participatory Pedagogy and Head of Educational Research, UAL) for the next session in the Opening Out series.


The first half of each event will be dedicated to presentations and discussion led by our invited speakers. The second half will focus on questions and discussion from the audience. Ask your questions at the link here.


Speaker Bios

ProfessorShânWareing is Vice-Chancellor of Middlesex University. She previously served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Northampton, Chief Operating Officer at London South Bank University, and Pro Vice-Chancellor Learning and Teaching at Buckinghamshire New University. Shân has also worked with University of the Arts London, leading institutional transformation projects on assessment and feedback that achieved sustained improvements in student satisfaction. She is Chair of the Unite Foundation, Chair of AdvanceHE’s Leadership and Management Strategic Advisory Group, and a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Her research focuses on leadership, governance, diversity and inclusion, and higher education policy.

Professor Jason Arday is Professor of Sociology of Education at the University of Cambridge, Faculty of Education and a Fellow at Jesus College, Cambridge. Previously, Jason was Professor of Sociology of Education at the University of Glasgow in the School of Education, College of Social Sciences. Professor Arday has also held the position of Associate Professor in Sociology at Durham University in the Department of Sociology and Deputy Executive Dean for People and Culture in the Faculty of Social Science and Health. Jason is a Patron of the Adult Literacy Trust (ALT) and Get Further. He was formerly a Trustee of the Runnymede Trust, the UK’s leading Race Equality Thinktank for 11 years. He is a Trustee of the British Sociological Association (BSA). Jason sits on the NHS Race and Health Observatory Academic Reference Group and the ITV Cultural Advisory Council.

Dr Silke Lange is Reader in Hybrid and Participatory Pedagogy and Head of Educational Research at UAL. Her research into critical inclusive art and design pedagogies, focuses specifically on collaborative, ethical and interdisciplinary practices. She was a collaborator in FUEL4Design: Future Education and Literacy for Designers, and works closely with the ELIA community on intercultural, border crossing projects such as the UAx Platform, and as advisor and moderator for the ELIA Dialogue Series: Higher Arts Education in Times of Conflict. This workshop is open to all UAL staff and guests.

This event will take place online. Please sign up using your UAL email and you will receive the link to the online event space on the day of the event.
