Course overview
This course gives an insight into working with trends for fashion and textiles. Our approach will be to gain a better awareness of the work that goes into forecasting, to aid strategic decision making for the product development process. We will look at information including concepts to inspire us, to how we can approach industry events in order to interpret the evolution of trends. This course includes some teamwork and personal work for experience.
Who this course is for
This course is for those who are wanting to gain or develop their understanding of fashion and textile forecasting of trends. We can include those who are considering roles in the fashion business plus professionals who wish to gain a fuller perspective of this area.
Please note: This 25 hour short course is offered in 2 formats - an intensive week-long option and a 10-week evening course. The week-long format includes a class research trip, while the 10-week evening course does not due to scheduling constraints.

Topics covered
- You will engage with a broad range of information that demonstrates the areas to be considered when building trends - including research into fabrics, silhouettes, styles, to leading designers and insights into industry events.
- The observation and analysis of current trends, their movements and their position in the market.
- You will explore visual research and generate ideas.
- Individual project work aims for you to gain experience in the concept development process, developing inspirations alongside interpreting research.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course, thee learner will be able to:
- Identify the wide range of information to be researched in Trend forecasting.
- Identify the role of industry events, and their place in the scheduling.
- Identify and investigate how trend concepts develop and build.
- Begin to explore or enhance your own work through engagement in Trend Forecasting projects.
- Reflect on and utilise the information in course hand-outs.
- Digital badge and certificate of attendance.
On the first day please bring :
- A small (passport-size) photograph of yourself.
- An object or an image that inspires you now.
Materials
- Notebook / sketchbook and pen - for research notes and collecting observations.
- Laptop or tablet.
- A4 folder for collecting hand-out information throughout the course.
- Any photos, tear-sheets, images and/or written articles that relate to a current trend of interest to you.
As the course progresses you will also need :
- These items will be for project work, so suggest getting them during the course.
- Photos, tear-sheets and images (such as magazines or your own sources)
- Collected materials for colour.
- Fabric cuttings (possibly / not essential).
- Card to mount work.
- Folder / something to carry your project work.
- Scissors and matt tape / can be shared
Additional materials may be required to enable the production of your project. This will become evident as your work progresses.

Bridget Miles has much experience of working in the area of forecasting future trends. She has worked in three business sectors: fabric manufacturing, design consultancy and clothing retail.
