Amongst the many amazing online courses for teenagers that we have been able to deliver this year, what we have been most excited about is the fabulous work students have been creating whilst studying in our digital classrooms.
Today we showcase the exceptional work created by Art and Design School at Home for 13 to 16 Year Olds Online Short Course students. Based on our popular residential summer school which we have been running since 2009, the course was created for teenagers looking to get the art school experience whilst studying at home.
Whether you consider yourself a complete beginner or if you are already studying art and design at school, this course will give you the experience of learning at Central Saint Martins. During the two weeks students explore the following subjects, which are all supported by relevant talks and discussions:
- Observational drawing - still life, figure and portrait
- Painting and colour mixing
- Colour, collage and mark making
- Typography, graphic design and zines
- 3D modelling
- Spatial design and photographic documentation
- Illustration
- Research and idea generation
- Selecting work for exhibition
Towards the end of the course, you will take these techniques and apply them to a personal project of your choosing with guidance from your tutor. All students will complete the course with sketchbooks full of ideas, along with a number of finished works and new technical abilities, all of which will help inspire your art and design practice in the future

Tutor, Ilga Leimanis, said of the course, “I taught a wonderful online version of the Art and Design course during which the students spent time developing skills, drawing, painting, modelling, spatial design, etc., testing materials and processes, as well as expanding their ability to research, experiment and idea generate in order to develop a new direction. We explored the presentation of this project and learned how to write about the work in the form of an artist statement. This online format worked really well, the students were able to share with the group what they were doing and they felt they learned a lot: it was a full experience. It was very direct and they were also able to speak to each other from their rooms in different parts of the world, Vancouver, London, Switzerland and Moscow, via the online breakout rooms.”
