June Fish, our Specialist Technician in Print and Dye at Central Saint Martins, recently came up with a brilliant idea for re-using waste paper and raising valuable funds for charity in the process.
During heat press projects, students have to use a lot of newsprint paper to protect the presses while printing with transfer dyes. The numbers of students using this technique has increased considerably in recent years, which results in a paper mountain at the end of the year! Although students are encouraged to reuse these papers as a mask for screen printing or as drawing/sketching paper, there is still much leftover.
June suggested printing the surplus papers with Christmas images using left-over print pastes. These were then distributed in rolls of 4 sheets and sold for just £1. As a result, our print team raised £120 for the homeless charity Crisis. Congratulations to all involved!
