Create an Experimental Score to a Silent Film: Win a £1,000 grant and premiere at Aesthetica Short Film Festival

Aesthetica and Audible are inviting all UAL students to explore the power of storytelling through sound. This year, we’re launching a new opportunity: an open call to pitch for the creation of an experimental score to accompany a pre-1925 silent film.

This is your opportunity to create something extraordinary. We’re looking for original sound/music that explore the limitless ways we interpret the world around us.

Your idea should reimagine these historical films through sound and transform the cinematic experience for contemporary audiences. The selected work will premiere at Aesthetica Film Festival in November 2025.

We are looking for bold, original approaches that push the boundaries of audio-visual storytelling. Whether you're composing from a place of emotion, abstraction or innovation, we want to hear how you’ll transform the selected shorts with sound.

The winner will receive a £1,000 grant and have the work premiered at this year’s Aesthetica Short Film Festival.

Silent Short Films to respond to (please select one)

One Week

This is consistently listed amongst Buster Keaton’s best and most famous short films. It also includes some nice visuals and practical effects of a house being built and rebuilt. A fun one!

Watch or download One Week.

Le voyage dans la lune

This is a classic silent short that’s always listed on round-ups of “best silent films” etc. The theme of travelling to space is interesting today, given the rise of commercial space travel and discussions around settling on other planets. The imagery of the moon from this film is instantly recognisable.

Watch or download Le voyage dans la lune.

Charlie Chaplin's "The Immigrant"

This is consistently listed amongst Charlie Chaplin’s best and most famous short films. Its themes are interesting when reconsidered today – with it focusing on people traveling to America in search of a better life.

Watch or download Charlie Chaplin's "The Immigrant".

Or suggest your own

You can alternatively suggest your own silent short, but it needs to be open access / public domain so pre-1925.

How to apply

Please apply by filling out the Sound Commission 2025 application form.

Deadline
