At London College of Communication, we are proud of our extensive range of technical facilities – ranging from heritage processes like letterpress to the latest innovations in 3D printing and virtual reality.

Our specialist workshops and studios are equipped to industry standards and are run by highly skilled technicians, ensuring that students are equipped with the skills they need from the moment they graduate.

As the world around us continues to change, and as technologies develop and enhance at a faster and faster rate, we continually invest in our Technical Resources and facilities to ensure that we are not only keeping up with the latest changes, but are helping to shape them.

Throughout the 2023 summer break, as a College we invested heavily in a range of improvements, upgrades and additions to our technical spaces and facilities.

Updates to LCC Technical Resource spaces

Creative Technology Hub

We are very excited to introduce the newly-created Creative Technology Hub, located on the ground floor of the Workshop Block.

As part of our Emerging Technologies portfolio, this suite of resources incorporates a larger and enhanced Creative Technology Lab, a Collaboration Space, a new feature to enhance teamwork and communication among users, two project rooms, dedicated spaces for students' projects to streamline your workflow, and a new Visualisation Space that will host our forthcoming projection mapping and immersive media equipment.

The Digital Space

The Digital Space has expanded its workshop provision, with the addition of two new teaching rooms (a Mac Room and a PC Room) to increase capacity and help deliver more great classes.

We are also introducing the new Digital Production Studio this year, which is a space where students will be able to film, photograph, record, and experiment with capture technologies.

The studio will be bookable by students through the Online Resource Booking (ORB) system and will require a basic induction before booking.

3D Workshop - Digital Fabrication

We're thrilled to share exciting news about our 3D workshop, which has been expanded to provide more space for creativity.

The updated Digital Fabrication space now includes two cutting-edge pieces of equipment: a versatile CNC machine capable of cutting 2D and 3D objects, and a new Mimaki colour 3D printer.

These improvements open the door to intricate designs and vibrant creations, underscoring a commitment to innovation.

Our 3D Print Workshop has been completely refurbished, and the new full-colour Mimaki 3D printer can produce a full spectrum of colours, including clear, offering students greater flexibility and creativity in their 3D printing projects.

A new CNC Workshop has been established, which features a new flat-bed 3-Axis CNC router as its centrepiece. This powerful machine can handle full-sized sheets of material (8"x4") – providing our students with the opportunity to work on large-scale projects.

Design Block Photography (Image Capture Studios)

As part of the College's Emerging Technology Strategy, we have acquired a new Photogrammetry system, which we are currently testing before it is made available for use in the spring term.

The full capture rig incorporating lighting and Alienware rendering computers  is capable of producing high-resolution, photo-realistic 3D digital assets with stunning results for use in virtual/extended reality environments, with other uses applicable in gaming, animation, and 3D printing.

Digital Print

While our Xerox V180 still maintains the highest quality for booklet and publication printing, the popular Digital Print facilities in W211 on the second floor of the Workshop Block have been enhanced by the purchase of two Epson SureColor wide format printers. These come equipped with dual roll technology and an advanced colour system that delivers results equivalent to 8 colour cartridge printers using just 6 colours.

Self-service printing has been upgraded with the purchase of RICOH SP printers. These use the latest advancements in print technology taking advantage of smoother gradations, brighter colours, and sharper text for exceptional image quality.

Please visit the Digital Print Moodle page for further information on our new paper stocks and new pricing structure.

Risograph Room

The Risograph room has recently been updated. This open-access print facility is located in W237B, within the Print and Finishing department.

Inductions for this space are booked through the "Book a Workshop" area of ORB. After completing an induction students are qualified to book to use Risograph as an open access resource independently.

We have 9-12 open access slots available each day, ranging from 1-1.5 hours long. All open access slots are booked by searching Risograph in the "Rooms and Spaces" area of ORB.

Film & TV

The TV studio is now a fully 4K production space, upgraded to Blackmagic 4K Broadcast cameras and Fujinon 4K lenses.

We have also completed work on a dedicated grading suite with a Sony broadcast grading monitor and a grading console.

The room has been designed to facilitate industry-standard working practices and is intended to be used extensively for major projects.

Sound Arts

The Rehearsal Space located in W401 is a new live studio/band practice space being run between the Sound Arts and Music Production courses, available to all students of those courses.
