We're really excited to prepare for CSM Shows 2023. Thousands of people come to Central Saint Martins during our end-of-year shows to see our graduating student's work. It’s a wonderful time in the College calendar, but it's also the busiest time for our Granary building and staff. Here’s everything you need to know!

Preparing work for the shows

Risk Assessments (RAMS)

If you are exhibiting work in the shows, you will need to produce a Risk Assessment and Method Statement (RAMS) for your exhibit to demonstrate that you understand the risks that are created by your piece during installation, the show and the take down. Your tutor will provide RAMS templates for you in advance of the show build. Once complete, these RAMS should be sent to your Tutor/area leader for approval.

PAT testing small electrical items

If your show display includes electrical items, they will need to be PAT tested before they are installed. PAT testing is designed to check the wiring of electrical equipment for any defects that could be dangerous. The most common items in the shows are:

  • Projectors
  • Laptops/iPad/tablets with chargers
  • TVs/monitors
  • Extension cables
  • DVD players

Please note

  • Un fused power adapters (must be a U.K 3 pin fused type)
  • No open electrical circuits or bare wiring. Work must be contained in an electrical project, box, and no exposed bare electrical wires.
  • Any electrical wiring for mains power must use standard 3 core cable.
  • Any complex electrical installations are subject to the electrician's inspection and approval
Get PAT tested

A PAT testing session is scheduled in the Street at King’s Cross on Wed 7 June 13.00-16.00. Please bring any items to be tested to the Street during this session.

MA Fine Art and MA Art & Science students should join the PAT testing session scheduled for Tuesday 13 June at Archway. See information on Moodle.

Other MA students should bring items that need to be PAT tested to The Street at King's Cross on Thurs 22 June, 13:00-16:00. Further session/s can be arranged if required.

Please avoid mounting or fixing your items in place before they are tested, because the PAT tester will need to do a visual inspection of the item. If your item is too difficult to move / needs to be tested in the installation space, or there is a large group with multiple items to be tested, you can request that the PAT tester visit you. Please contact csmpattesting@arts.ac.uk.

Student helpers

If you would like to bring volunteers into the College to help you build your show display, please complete the Student Helper Permission Request Form (PDF 203KB) and submit this to your Course Leader. You may then be able to collect a wristband for your helper from the Control Room. These wristbands will only be valid before the show begins and for the specified day.

If you would like to bring in paid contractors, they must complete their own risk assessment and method statement (RAMS) and submit this to estateshelpdesk@arts.ac.uk for approval.

Funding to help with your show

The  University Hardship Fund is a means-tested hardship grant to assist with study costs. It is not a loan and does not need to be repaid. Eligibility requirements are on the application form.

Wristbands and guest tickets for graduating students

All guest tickets will be digital. Tickets are scanned on entry and will admit one person per ticket. To reduce waste and waiting times, guests will be given wristbands if they leave the building and plan to come back in.

Non-graduating students: entry information

CSM students not graduating in 2023 are asked to attend the public opening days due to limited capacity at Previews.

Drinks

Please do not bring your own alcohol to the show as it contradicts our license. There will be card-only bars within the building should you wish to enjoy a beverage.

Children

Some works will be unsuitable for young children. We'll mark these pieces with signs, and our staff will help you avoid them. Children must be supervised by an adult at all times.

We will have baby-changing facilities on-site for CSM Shows: 13-18 June.

Some show spaces may not be suitable for strollers, where possible please use a sling. There will be a stroller park located in the Platform Bar for the opening show.

Security

During the shows, you may be bringing expensive personal items/equipment into the building. Please take steps to protect your belongings, as the University cannot take responsibility for loss or damage of personal property. To keep your items safe, please remove or lock your valuables away when you are not present. Security officers will be stationed at key points around the building during the shows, they are there to ensure safe procedures and behaviour onsite and not to monitor personal belongings. If you see anything suspicious, please report it to one of the officers.

Accessibility

Our building is fully accessible. We plan our shows carefully to ensure they are accessible to all. For more information check: https://www.accessable.co.uk/venues/central-saint-martins-king-s-cross-main-building

If you have any brand queries, or would like to obtain approval for correct use of the CSM logo, please email Digital and Brand Manager Colin Buttimer c.buttimer@csm.arts.ac.uk.

Social media, press and editorial

The communications team will be sharing your work throughout the show. If you have any questions about social media, please contact csmdigitalteam@arts.ac.uk.

Tag #CSM2023 and use our CSM Shows 2023 overlays for sharing your work on Instagram – available from your course External Liaison Coordinator. CSM Shows 2023 IG filter will be available via @csm_news.

The audience for the show will include press. If you have any questions about working with press, please contact CSM Media Relations Manager Jo Ortmans: j.ortmans@csm.arts.ac.uk.

Graduate Showcase

The Central Saint Martins Shows will be complemented by the online showcase at graduateshowcase.arts.ac.uk. Participating in the Graduate Showcase can help your work reach an even wider global audience, who might not be able to attend the exhibitions in person.

You can upload your work as soon as you’re ready. When your profile has been checked and approved, we will send you a QR code that you can display beside your work in the building, to provide visitors with quick access to your contact details and more information about your work.

Visit the Graduate Showcase: Practical Info section of the UAL website for a video on how to upload your work to the online platform, as well as advice on writing about your work, making your work digitally accessible, protecting your intellectual property and more. Tutors will be available to help you present your work online and to advise you of the deadline for upload. They will also check and provide feedback if there are any improvements that you can make.

Art sales

If you choose, you can make your work available to purchase by linking to your online store on the Graduate Showcase. Please read our guidance on how to sell your work.

Artwork sales are handled directly by the artist.
