As we approach our Teach Inspire Create Conference on 24 November, we spoke to keynote speaker Andria Zafirakou, about the importance of creative education for young people and what she will be sharing in her speech.

Andria is a Vice Principal of England’s only seven-consecutive time Ofsted rated ‘Outstanding’ school. Her specialism is arts and textiles and for the last nineteen years has worked in some of the most marginalised communities in London.

She has been recognised as an education leader through accolades such as being a recipient of the million dollar Global Teacher Prize in 20418, a Culture Leader by the World Economic Forum, a Member of the The High-Level Panel on the Teaching Profession which was established by the UN Secretary-General in 2023, a Honorary Doctorate from the University of Worcester, and was nominated by the late Queen Elizabeth II for a MBE for her services to education.

She is also the author of the bestselling book “Those who can, Teach” which was published by Bloomsbury in April 2021 and her most recent book “Lessons in Life” was published by Quercus in May 2023.

Why do you think creative education is important for young people?

Creative opportunities and moments that enable young people to be expressive, communicate who they are and introduce us to their identity. They also help to develop vital transformative skills that are needed in all areas of life.

Please can you tell us more about your charity 'Artists in Residence'?

After winning the Global Teacher Prize, I wanted to create opportunities to support artists to work in schools with young people so that the children would receive specialist experiences from professional role models.

You have stated that you have worked in some of London’s most marginalised communities. Why do you think it’s important to try and help everyone have access to equal opportunities?

Equality is key and the golden thread of education. Participation in the arts can further develop skills and increase cultural awareness which helps to enrich lives.

Congratulations on winning the 2018 Global Teacher Prize and being named the best teacher in the world! What are the main pieces of advice that would you give to other educators in the creative sector?

Know that you are very important and special people that are helping to create joy, happiness and inspiration in a young person’s life.

What will you be speaking about at the Teach Inspire Create Conference?

I’ll be talking about the power of the art classroom.

Tickets are limited so don’t forgot to book your ticket now to hear from Andria, as well as our other keynote speakers, Kay Adekunle Rufai and Tina Ramdeen!
