Provocation: What aspect of your culture positively shapes you as a creative person who connects with the world around you?

This academic year we have created a series of new provocations with Karina H Maynard to illuminate and draw attention to alternative jump-off points for creative practice. They are there to engage students in creative projects that explore themes beyond the core curriculum of their qualifications.

The provocations will increase awareness and engagement with topics relating to Global History, Decolonisation and Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.

The first provocation will celebrate unique cultural identities.

What aspect of your culture positively shapes you as a creative person who connects with the world around you?

Students will create work that affirms their cultural identity. This provocation will prompt students to consider how their culture has shaped them as a creative and positively impacts their interactions with people who are culturally different.

Cultural identity can relate to:

  • Heritage, such as nationality, ethnicity or race
  • Culture relating to local area, country or specific geographical region
  • Or other cultures that students identify with, such as subcultures, alternative cultures
  • or artistic movements.

This provocation encourages students to affirm positive self-identity, respect for others and belonging.
