Closing up our Teach Inspire Create Keynote’s for this academic year, we’re excited to welcome Joe Townsend, Head of CoLab and BA Music Performance and Industry at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, for The artist as changemaker in a changing time on Friday 21 May at 2pm.
In this session Joe will introduce learning and teaching strategies for early career survival that lead to sustainable and rewarding futures for creative artists. The session is intended to propose ideas and stimulate debate, so that together teachers can also create change in uncertain times.
All delegates must book a place to attend. Booking in advance is also highly recommended.
About Joe
As well as his academic roles at Trinity Laban, Joe also leads the ground-breaking artist development work that prepares students for sustainable careers in the music industry. Initially a self-taught musician in the punk era, he later trained in Jazz on the violin at Guildhall in the 1980s and then at Community Music using improvisation as a tool for social change.
He has collaborated with a wide range of artists such as Gavin Bryars, Laurie Anderson, Roma and Bluegrass musicians. As a composer he has created many works for the theatre, including the National Theatre and Opera North. His interest in cross-disciplinary performance has resulted in commissions in Romania, Japan and China.
As well as being a cultural commentator, Joe regularly speaks at conferences on collaboration, pedagogy, audience development and social entrepreneurship. He consults on early career survival for emerging artists with Serious Productions, Help Musicians UK and English Folk Expo and running courses for the V&A Innovative Leadership Programme.
