Joining us for our second Inspire keynote in our Teach Inspire Create 2021 programme, titled ‘Exploring the role of arts educators in improving cultural representation’ is Curator, Educator and Producer, Karina H Maynard.

As a Board Member and Executive Director for Urdang Academy, Karina specialises in representation in the arts and culture.

Karina curates programmes that explore the social impetus for transformative creative movements. She curated programming for the Paris-Londres: Music Migrations (1962-1989) exhibition at the Palais de la Porte Dorée, Paris (2019) and produced the Inspired Leadership in the 21st century: Mandela 100 centenary programme at the British Museum (2018).

Karina consults the education, arts and entertainment sector on decolonisation, anti-discriminatory practice and engagement.

A London College of Communication graduate with over 20 years of experience in journalism, she writes for publication and has presented music and interview shows on Colourful Radio at the Africa Centre in London (2013-2021). In 2020 she worked on the development of the Black British Theatre Awards on Sky Arts.

An experienced moderator and keynote speaker, recent events include the Black Cultural Archives Black Lens Film Festival Emergent Strand supported by Netflix and the ISTD's Talking Dance: Improving Racial Equity symposium.

Considering the key question of 'How are visionary creatives uniquely positioned to help create a better society?', Karina will deliver an uplifting presentation that explores the responsibility and opportunity for arts educators to develop the skills that are paramount to improving the representation, engagement and experience of diverse students.

In the session, Karina will discuss:

  • Embodying the principles of learning and education through continuous personal and professional development
  • Accepting historical context to understand contemporary challenges
  • Exploring our belief systems
  • The reflective skills required to create positive learning environments
  • How to facilitate empowering educational experiences that nurture positive self-identity, social interactions and self-esteem for students

All delegates must book a place to attend. Booking in advance is also highly recommended.
