UAL Russia Alumni Group: Share It! & Marketplace

Share It!

Last week the UAL Russia alumni group held their first ‘Share It!’ debate club, which was the first in a series of events open to alumni of UAL, as well as the general public.

The club was held last Friday evening at the British Higher School of Art and Design.  This helped create a special atmosphere by mixing current students and those experienced in the creative industries.  Speakers covered three different disciplines united by a topic of ‘Reconstruction’. Fedor Toshchev talked about his research on memory and nostalgia, architect Maria Panova spoke about working within a complex historical context on the project ‘Electrotheatre Stanislavsky’, and sculptor Anna Mokhova shared her approach to referencing archival images in a search for a form.  Alongside UAL Alumni, there were representatives from Christies and Sotheby’s, as well as School teaching staff from a range of UK institutions. This mixture of different levels of expertise sent the discussion in a number of different directions, including academic’s as well as practitioner’s perspectives. Having three speakers from different disciplines (photography, architecture and sculpture) also added to the depth of the debate.

It was a great opportunity for everyone to meet new people and find points of connection, so the debate continued later on into the night, away from the School environment…

‘Share It!’ debate club meetings are scheduled to happen every month, so If you wish to learn more about further gatherings please join our Facebook page.

Marketplace

The Russian alumni group is also planning their first market UALARM (University of the Arts London Alumni in Russia Market). This is a great opportunity for UAL alumni to showcase their work in Russia and also to promote it to the general public.

The Market will be on 23 May from 12.00pm at Powerhouse Moscow (who have kindly agreed to host the market) – this is a young and contemporary space, based in a 19th century mansion at Goncharnaya with a wonderful open air backyard and lovely bar and kitchen. We will finish the day with a party!

Participation in the event is free!

UAL alumni can enter any of the following categories:

1. Selling design and applied arts objects (jewellery, fashion garments, accessories, presents, prints, etc.)
2. Lectures and masterclasses
3. Fine art exhibition (solo or group)
4. Performance

Please feel free to enter more than one category, and to propose any new categories you think will be relevant.  Our first organisational meeting will take place in mid-April and we will do our very best to find space for everyone.

Applications can be submitted by the end of March in any appropriate format to ualrussiaalumni@gmail.com with the category clearly stated in the topic.
