More on: Syed's pre-degree story
Rebuilding momentum after the pandemic.
For Zarlakhta, the pre-degree route wasn’t just a choice, it was the opportunity she needed. After completing the Winter Insight Programme at Central Saint Martins, she knew she wanted to study Architecture. But her A-level results didn’t meet direct entry requirements, so she chose the UAL Foundation Diploma in Art and Design, specialising in 3D Design. “It turned out to be the perfect stepping stone,” she says, helping her build a strong portfolio and gain the experience needed for BA (Hons) Architecture.
Community played a huge role in her pre-degree year. “Everyone shares a passion for art in their own way, which creates a strong sense of community and connection,” she explains. Societies and opportunities to collaborate made the transition into UAL student life smoother.
Her creative process also became more exploratory. “I’ve learned to start projects with a general form or concept rather than focusing on every detail from the beginning. This approach has helped me stay flexible and creative.”
One standout element of the course was participating in group critique sessions where students present their work and receive feedback. “It was eye-opening to hear ideas I hadn’t considered, which helped me develop my projects further and grow as a designer.”
Progression support helped her put everything into practice. “Each student was assigned a personal tutor, which helped us build strong references through regular one-to-one meetings. We also had the chance to visit campuses, speak with current students, and meet course leaders.”
Receiving an offer for her first-choice course was a meaningful moment. “A year earlier, it felt out of reach due to my grades, so getting accepted felt surreal.”
