Here you will find the answers to frequently asked questions about applying to our halls of residence.
Online application system
What is the criteria for being offered accommodation?
We encourage you to pick your top 5 halls as that will give us a better indicator as to what your preferred choices are. We endeavour to give you one of your top 5. The sooner you apply, the more likely you are to get one of these choices. Please note that we prioritise applications from all disabled students, as well as any student under the age of 18. If you have special requirements you must notify us of your needs on your application for accommodation.
What happens if I can’t get onto the online application system?
We encourage you to be patient on application day. The website will be experiencing large amounts of traffic, so it’s important to keep trying. Refreshing the page will slow our systems down so please avoid doing this when applying. We also suggest accessing the system on a desktop computer rather than a mobile device (including tablets).
Do I have to pick 5 halls?
We encourage you to pick your top 5 halls, as that will give us a better indicator as to what your preferred choices are. We will endeavour to give you one of your top 5. Please apply early to avoid disappointment, the sooner you apply, the more likely you are to get one of these choices. Depending on when you apply you may not get your first choice, so we encourage you to use all 5 choices. If you do not pick 5 and your choice is not available, we will allocate based on availability.
What is a 'mobility adaptable' room?
Mobility adaptable rooms are available at many halls to cater for disabled students or students with particular access needs. Please check the ‘Information for students with disabilities’ section on the relevant page within Halls of Residence to find out about the facilities at each hall.
When will I get confirmation about which hall I’m at?
If you apply in the spring, you should receive an offer on either Thursday 3 June or Thursday 1 July. From the end of July, we will send out offers daily, subject to availability.
Will I be contacted by all the halls I have selected or do I receive 1 offer?
You will receive one offer from our main UAL Accommodation Services email. If you’re staying at a UAL managed hall, you’ll need to log into your student accommodation portal to read and agree to the regulations and tenancy contract. For partnership halls, you will need to sign your contract and go through the acceptance process.
What if I change my preferences after I’ve submitted my application?
If you make any changes to your application whilst you’re waiting to receive an offer from us, your application date will change to the date you resubmitted your application. You will then need to wait approximately 3 weeks until you receive your offer. We strongly encourage you not to do this as it will delay your application.
If I disclose my disability will that put me at a disadvantage?
We encourage you to be open to us about your requirements. All our halls are very different and we will be able to make recommendations regarding which facilities will suit your needs. We prioritise all disabled students throughout the application process and during your stay in halls. If you have special requirements you must notify us of your needs on your application for accommodation.
If I'm studying in my second or third year at UAL can I apply for accommodation?
We encourage students from all years of study to apply for halls. Please note this is subject to availability, no outstanding debt and a satisfactory reference from your Residence Manager.
What happens if I miss the deadline for my accommodation offer?
We normally contact students via email before the deadline to remind them to either accept or reject their offer. If we do not hear from you, you may lose your allocated room, and although we will try to allocate you a new room in a different round, it may not be in the same hall. I want to reject my offer, can I re-apply?
This year, we have two rounds of offers, so if you apply in the spring, we will try our best to allocate you one of your top five choices on either Thursday 3 June or Thursday 1 July. If you reject your offer after this date, we can still consider you in our summer offers, however, rooms will be subject to availability. Can I change rooms once I’m there if I don’t like it?
Room moves are considered on a case by case basis. If you have any concerns about your room or wish to move, please contact your Residence Manager or Halls team.
What if I want to move to another hall or into private accommodation?
If you would like to move to another hall or private accommodation before the end of your contract, you will be required to make this request through your student accommodation web portal and then find a replacement for your room (another UAL student). At certain times of the year, we may be able to assist you if we have a waiting list, however, the responsibility is ultimately yours and you will be liable for the rent until another person moves in and takes over the contract. If you are leaving halls early because you have decided not to complete your course of study, please contact us directly by phone, email or in person.
Can I cancel my contract when my course finishes?
Your tenancy is a legal contract and you are committed to this by law. If you need to move out, you will be required to make this request through your student accommodation web portal and then find a replacement for your room (a UAL student).
Can I pay my deposit in September when I get my loan?
You will need to pay your deposit and advance rent before you accept your place in halls. You cannot defer this payment; it must be made before you accept your offer. Please note this amount may vary per hall.
Can my parents/guardian set up the payment on my behalf?
Your parent or guardian can set up your payment, however, it is you as an individual who will be named on the tenancy and ultimately your responsibility to make sure your rent payments are made.
Which account will my rent come out of?
At the time of accepting your offer, you will be given the option to pay your rent by 1 bank transfer or 3 termly amounts using a credit or debit card. If you pay by card, your rent payment will be deducted from the card you paid your deposit and advance rent with. Should you wish to change the card to pay your rent with, please contact Accommodation Services on firstname.lastname@example.org to change these details.
How do I know which hall is closest to my College?
Our Halls of Residence section features a map showing all the halls locations and each halls of residence page gives a full breakdown of all the travel options for each hall. A commute to College should take 45-60 minutes so it’s worth downloading the Citymapper app to plan your journeys around town. Check out tfl.gov.uk for other useful travel information too.
Can I live with my friends in halls?
If you would like to request living with a friend, you will need to make this clear in your application. We treat each case individually and it is not an automated system, so we will make sure your request is considered and we will try our best to accommodate you if possible.

What’s communal living like?
Living in halls means you get to live independently, whilst enjoying the facilities of a managed building. If you choose a room with a shared kitchen you’ll have the chance to socialise easily with other members of your flat. When you arrive we give you lots of information about harmonious living, for example setting up a kitchen rota as soon as you can to ensure there are no disputes about cleanliness.
