With the deadline to apply for the 2021 UAL Diploma in Creative Computing on Friday 11 June, CCI's new video series takes you inside the course, uncovering students' experiences during and since their Diploma year - hosted by current Diploma student Rocío Rey (she/her) WebsiteLinkedInInstagram.

Students who've completed the year in creative computing at CCI and gone back to their original BA talk how their practice and perspectives have expanded after that one-year romance with creative computing.

The Diploma (year in creative computing) is for 2nd year students to join a mix of other students from across UAL Colleges to learn computational skills at the Creative Computing Institute. And creative graduates can take it as an extra year after their BA with the Graduate Diploma in Creative Computing.

In one year - even less, just 9 months! - you get to learn so much from so many different creative technology fields. I’ve been given loads of material which has allowed me to fulfill my knowledge crave and carry out the projects I’ve always wanted to carry out but never had the skills to do so

— Rocío Rey

Watch the video

In the first 30-minute episode (June 2021), Rocío shares virtual space with Diploma graduates Jessie Zhang and Max Zimmerer, both studying BA Graphic Communication Design at Central Saint Martins who completed the year in creative computing in 2020.

Jessie and Max will graduate this year at CSM with an enhanced degree title: BA (Hons) Graphic Communication Design (with Creative Computing). They share their experiences and projects developed on and after the course - and break down some of the most common concerns that students have about applying, such as:

  • Scared about being a year ‘behind’
  • Fears that coding is too daunting
  • Worry about not graduating with their friends

Other students share their Diploma love..

Until second year, I don’t think I really knew what I wanted to do at all. Part of the reason why I went on the Diploma was to try and figure that out. I had always had this interest in technology and interaction, and then gaining all these new skills, I realised that technology was something that I wanted to continue to work with after graduating. I just really enjoyed creating these experiences that people could interact with. So yes, it did change my career path in a way that helped me figure out what I wanted to do.

It definitely changed my interest and overall practice. Before, I was very heavily interested in branding and the more traditional side of graphic design; and I still am today. But just going into this one year, being introduced to JavaScript and mainly being able to instead of just interfacing with the web, being able to actually create for it and making tools or websites that other people can use was so powerful to me back then. […] So yes, definitely. That one year made a pretty big difference, just having the time to experiment with different coding languages and technologies. I’m super glad that I did it!

“I would say that personally coming to CCI is one of the best things that could have happened to my practice. The Diploma will give you space to truly experiment and challenge yourself and break yourself away from old routines and patterns. The tutors are incredible and really support you no matter what stage you’re at!”

“CCI has been the BEST learning experience I’ve had in my 3 years at UAL. Invigorating, Challenging, Dynamic. The tutors come from a broad range of backgrounds. Getting mentored by this range of creative identities, gave me inspiration, insight and so much to draw from whilst forging my own.  An artist's future can feel foggy or uncertain but thanks to CCI I have more clarity on how I might situate myself as a creative technologist post university in the ‘real world’.”
