Your first few weeks at university can be a daunting and overwhelming experience. Over the next few days, you’ll meet lots of new people, you’re going to find out lots of new information, and you may be getting used to living in a brand-new city – or even country!

But try not to worry. At London College of Communication, we have lots of people and lots of support in place to help you make the most of your time here.

To help you settle in, Natalia Zmarzlik – a recent graduate of BA (Hons) Journalism at LCC – has put together these quick tips highlighting 6 things you need to know about starting your studies at LCC.

And don’t forget, you can also access the LCC Big Welcome Guide – packed full of helpful information and advice about studying at London College of Communication and UAL.

1. Check your schedule before arriving on site

The LCC site is big – much bigger than it may seem from the outside – and it can take a lot of time to walk from one end to the other. Check your schedule before you arrive so that you know where it is you need to go.

If you are lost or unsure of where to go, ask someone in the Information Centre at the front of the College, or a fellow student or member of staff, who will gladly help. Check your course timetable and see LCC’s opening hours for more details.

2. Don’t worry if you don’t own specialist equipment

LCC has a Kit Room from where all students can borrow course-specific equipment to complete their assignment – from cameras and tripods to audio recordings, lights and camera-stabilisation devices. Most items are available free of charge or for a small fee.

Book via the ORB (Online Resource Booking) and collect from the Kit Room (second floor, Workshop Block). You can see opening times on the Technical Resources Moodle page.

3. There are plenty of places where you can get support

Student Services offers a wide range of services to ensure that all LCC students are being supported alongside their academic journey.

Don’t hesitate to reach out for Academic Support, mental health support, Careers and Employability or contact Peer Mentoring to get a personal mentor who will guide you through the depths of student life.

4. We have a library and study spaces you can use

LCC has one of the best-equipped libraries across all UAL sites. On top of thousands of physical books, magazines, and movies, the Library offers a wide range of electronic resources – including e-books and audio books.

All students can book a study space supplied with a desktop to work on. We also offer silent zone for those who prefer to work in quieter environment.

5. We offer plenty of additional workshops

Fancy developing a new hobby? LCC offers multiple training sessions and additional classes for students to attend outside the course-specific teaching and learning.

These range from language courses, through to creative writing workshops to Coptic binding classes. Bookings available via ORB.

6. Elephant and Castle is an area worth exploring

At LCC, we're proud to call Elephant and Castle our home. Not only is our building just a short distance from central London, we’re also part of a vibrant local community which boasts plenty of restaurants, shops, and cultural institutions of its own.

Whether you’re new to Elephant and Castle this year, or you’re a returning student who has been here for a little while now, there’s plenty to discover in our local area. Get to know Elephant and Castle and the best places Southwark has to offer.
