Developing Reader and Professor applications on the Teaching Pathway at UAL

This interactive workshop is aimed at academic colleagues at UAL who are in the process of applying for promotion to Reader or Professor in 2026 and forthcoming academic years. The session is focussed on developing your application and building on ways to tell your story whilst evidencing impact, working directly on your drafts. Join Dr Silke Lange (Reader in Hybrid and Participatory Pedagogy and Head of Educational Research, UAL) and Professor Martin Newth (Head of the School of Fine Art, and Professor of Art and Education at The Glasgow School of Art) for a practical engaging session.

In this session:

This three-hour workshop will guide attendees through reviewing and developing their draft evidence of impact and reach. Please note this is a structured session, not a drop in; participants are expected to attend for the full duration.

Hybrid participation is available for those who need it, though we strongly recommend attending in person where possible, as the activities are designed to work best in the room.

Facilitator bios

Dr Silke Lange is Reader in Hybrid and Participatory Pedagogy and Head of Educational Research at UAL. Her research into critical inclusive art and design pedagogies, focuses specifically on collaborative, ethical and interdisciplinary practices. She was a collaborator in FUEL4Design: Future Education and Literacy for Designers, and works closely with the ELIA community on intercultural, border crossing projects such as the UAx Platform, and as advisor and moderator for the ELIA Dialogue Series: Higher Arts Education in Times of Conflict. ProfessorMartin Newth is an artist, Head of the School of Fine Art, and Professor of Art and Education at The Glasgow School of Art. He studied at Newcastle University and the Slade School of Art, London. He has held leadership roles at University of the Arts London, where he was Programme Director of Fine Art at Chelsea for ten years, and at the Royal College of Art as Associate Dean (Education) in the School of Arts and Humanities. Martin is passionate about developing innovative and experimental approaches to learning, which characterise the courses and programmes he has shaped. He has led initiatives that support inclusive and forward-looking cultures of learning within specialist art university contexts. With Paweł Mendrek, he initiated the cross-European network .PNG, exploring how social and global conditions shape how art is made and taught. His artistic practice spans photography, video and installation, and his work has been exhibited internationally.(www.martinnewth.com)
